Every one of us entrepreneurs wants our businesses to be more popular. We want more eyes on our website and more love for our products. And yet, we also want to do good work.
Businesses used to be able to make, package and sell crap and still be profitable.
Today, however, the relationship with the audience is far too important… you sell one piece of shit and betray the confidence of your audience and you might find yourself up the creek without a paddle.
When we’re bootstrapping and making our own articles, podcasts, ebooks, products, etc., it’s a constant struggle to balance good work with work that gets popular, and on this episode we share exactly how we walk that path. Enjoy!

The Top 10 Mistakes in Online Business
Every week we talk with entrepreneurs. We talk about what’s working and what isn’t. We talk about successes and failures. We spend time with complete newbies, seasoned veterans, and everything in between.
One topic that comes up over and over again with both groups is mistakes made in starting businesses. Newbies love to learn about mistakes so they can avoid them. Veterans love to talk about what they wish they had known when starting out.
These conversations have been fascinating, so we compiled a list of the 10 mistakes we hear most often into a nifty lil' guide. Get the 10 Most Common Mistakes in Starting an Online Business here »

Wow, thanks for sharing our story, I am honored!
I’d just like to add one thing for folks out there: between launching our site and starting to get feedback was a LONG time (and it felt like an eternity). I think it was about 6 months before we ever got any feedback at all. So sometimes I think you need to be a little delusional to talk yourself into putting one foot in front of the other, every single day – even if you’re not getting anything back.
Then again, perhaps you have to be a bit delusional to be in this business at all though, right? :)
Mister @adamd knew the movie I was talking about: Jerry Maguire!

Guys, thanks so much for sharing this. I was so disappointed after writing three days a week (for three weeks) and getting comments and people actually reading my post to have someone suggest to one of the groups I posted in facebook to boot me out. After which(1 hour later) after getting input from some that I should not be booted, he decided to take my style discussion as an offering to his group. I was so bummed out, I have not written for three days. But, hearing your podcast today has given me a push to continue. The value I offer is sharing real agile experiences that talk about the results and impact whether positive or negative. It is really food for thought before jumping in. Keep up the great job guys!
Another great episode. You guys are on a roll.
Quick question I’m hoping someone can help me with. Which podcast player lets you speed up playback speed?
Hi Nick! I think just about all of them do… apple’s podcasts app, I use overcast, then there’s Downcast, Pocket Casts, etc. Most have a speed setting. Hope you find one that works! (and thanks for the kind words, man.)
Thanks for the Nick Drake podcast.
Yes! Hope you loved it.
Of course, you silly man. I love you all :)
The way I see it someone has to rise to the top and it cannot be everybody. Those that become popular become the example for everyone else. When people try to identify what qualities will make us a success, they look to people that have popularity/credibility and everything about their character and work ethic seems to be the holy grail.
I am glad you guys mentioned that there is no clear answer to what will become popular.
