“I don’t really have deep expertise in anything. I’m more of a jack of all trades. Do I have any business starting a business?”
We’ve heard this question a number of times at Fizzle, so let’s set the record straight and give you some insights about starting a business without expertise.
Today on the show we’ll cover these two questions:
- Do I need expertise before I build my business?
- If I have some expertise, how do i know if it’s enough to warrant a legit business?
- BONUS: Can Barrett do a Yoda impression?
Enjoy!

The Top 10 Mistakes in Online Business
Every week we talk with entrepreneurs. We talk about what’s working and what isn’t. We talk about successes and failures. We spend time with complete newbies, seasoned veterans, and everything in between.
One topic that comes up over and over again with both groups is mistakes made in starting businesses. Newbies love to learn about mistakes so they can avoid them. Veterans love to talk about what they wish they had known when starting out.
These conversations have been fascinating, so we compiled a list of the 10 mistakes we hear most often into a nifty lil' guide. Get the 10 Most Common Mistakes in Starting an Online Business here »

Did I miss Barrett doing a Yada impression? Must have, but I loved Chase’s Corbett impression.
I’m chuckling about the Nest/Honeywell gag. Unrelated: Have you heard Nest is falling apart internally?
I *have* heard this. Hoping they pull out of it.
Great show, could you guys expand more on the “I know Internet” What do I do with it? I’m sure many of us can relate to this one. I sure can.
How do you mean, Adi? Help me understand a bit more what you mean.
Yes of course, you where talking about how some of us know Internet, Social, Marketing and so on, we know how to build it but we don’t know where/how we can use it (architect the building as you
mentioned in the show). Do we start are own, do we build it for someone else of the suppose that we want to build our own business.
I guess that’s just the question. How you answer it is what matters. I worked for agencies for a while, doing that stuff for clients. Then I worked at a small startup, did that stuff for them. For me it was the search to find an idea that could work, a mission I cared enough about to keep working on even when it felt like a job. I was good at the movements but I didn’t have the direction. And that just took me some time. I found it for a while in FatherApprentice.com, and now with Fizzle. Your mileage will vary… work for a company you admire, Keep pursuing things that matter, then do your thing when you feel like you can’t hold it back anymore.
Love the answer, I truly agree with this. Thanks Chase.
This podcast definitely made me think. I think it was Corbett who said that you either want to teach something or want to solve a problem that’s out there, and I think this is where I’m at. I am a self taught baker and I’m trying to figure out where I’d like to go with that and how to start some sort of business out of it.
I think this podcast was an important one, and I’d love to hear more from all of you on similar topics. I had a Fizzle membership last year, but ended up cancelling because I couldn’t afford it (not that it is terribly expensive, but money is tight) but I still read the blog and occasionally listen to these podcasts.
